Volunteer of the Year

2006 Virginia PTA Volunteer’s of the Year
Honored at the Annual State Convention

All too often individuals that make a difference in children’s lives are not recognized or acknowledged.  The Virginia PTA knows the importance of having volunteers in our schools and recognizes those outstanding volunteers through the Volunteer of the Year Award program.  This year there were two awardees’ honored at the State Convention in Roanoke; an elementary Volunteer of the Year and a secondary Volunteer of the Year.

Sallie Matney from Christiansburg, the Parkway District, was selected as the elementary Volunteer of the Year.  Sallie is married to Kennith and has three children, Justin, Ryan and Christopher.  She currently serves as Secretary for the Christiansburg Primary School PTA and the Christiansburg Elementary School PTA.  The overwhelming recommendation letters from the local unit board, principal, teachers and office staff, were a clear indication that Sallie goes above and beyond.  She was described as one who does more then even the most dedicated volunteer does, honest, dependable, creative, and dedicated; and a pleasure to work with.  Congratulation Sallie and thank you for making a difference!

Debbie McCormack from Virginia Beach, the Tidewater District, was selected as the secondary Volunteer of the Year.  Debbie is married to Roger and has two children, Shelby and Thomas.  Her local unit is the Brandon Middle School PTA where she serves as Hospitality Chair, Band Parent and after school Concessions Stand Volunteer.  Recognizing those individuals that make the difference is a particular area that Debbie excels in.  She makes sure that everyone feels special. Her dedication, energetic and passionate work as a volunteer has earned her this award.  Her nomination stated that every action she took had the children and school’s best interest at heart.  Congratulations Debbie and thank you for making a difference!
