Nominating Committee FAQs

Leadership begins with the nominating committee. PTA is as effective as its leadership. Thus, the nominating committee is entrusted with a very important responsibility and the selection of its members becomes equally important.

Can a member of the nominating committee be considered for office?

Yes. However, he should not be present during the discussion of the prospective nominees for the office for which he is being considered. It is not necessary for him to resign from the committee if he becomes a candidate.

Can the President serve on the committee?

No. The president is an ex-officio member of all the committees except the nominating committee.

How does the committee report?

  • The unit bylaws state how the committee reports.
  • The committee members who agree should sign a written report of the offices and the nominees and a majority must be in agreement. The committee chairman, who signs first, should read the report.
  • The report is handed to the presiding officer. The committee is automatically discharged. When its report is presented to the association. Do not move adoption of the report.

How does the nominating committee function?

  1. The committee should meet immediately following election to select a chairman (if necessary) and to set a time and place for a future meeting.
  2. Notice should be given to all members of a local unit (feeder schools should be included at the intermediate/middle and high school levels) that nominations are being sought.
  3. Sufficient time should be allowed to discuss the qualifications of candidates. Discussions and proceedings should never be repeated outside the committee. All proceedings should be kept confidential.
  4. Prospective nominees should be contacted while the committee is in session and must agree to serve if elected. An individual committee member should not ask anyone to serve before the committee meets.
  5. The committee is responsible for selecting one or more nominees for each selected office as stated in the bylaws.

How is the committee chosen?

Your bylaws provide for this information. The common methods are: election by the membership or a combination of the membership and executive board. The President should never appoint the nominating committee.

What if a nominee withdraws before the election?

The committee meets again to select a replacement, unless the bylaws state otherwise.

What qualifications should the nominee have?

  • Must be a PTA member, knowledgeable about and a believer in the Purposes and basic policies of the PTA
  • Has had experience in PTA work, or other organizational work
  • Shows enthusiasm for PTA
  • Has time to give to PTA

When contacting the nominee, be sure he is informed concerning the work he is asked to undertake, that he is aware of the amount of time involved, and that he will commit himself to do an effective job. Please consider:

  • The nominee for President should be aware of the responsibility as a public relations figure for the local PTA. It may be helpful to consider someone who has been active on the Executive Committee during the current year.
  • It is recommended that the proposed slate of officers consist of both experienced and new PTA members.

Who serves as Chairman?

The bylaws should state how the chairman is chosen. If not, the committee selects its own chairman by majority vote.

Who should serve on the nominating committee?

Persons who are knowledgeable about their own community, interested and involved in the education process in both volunteer and professional capacities, and in the particular position of the PTA and its work within their community and school division. The committee should be able to describe the duties of the offices involved.
