Letters to Congress-generate 25 letters from PTA members to U. S. representatives & senators on:

  • Funding for education
  • Opposition to vouchers
  • School meals program
  • Tobacco regulations
  • Parent’s rights

Letters to State Legislators - generate 25 letters from PTA members to state legislators on:

  • funding for education
  • child welfare issues
  • child-safety laws
  • parental involvement

Contacts with Elected Officials:

  • Visit your U. S. representative and senators in Washington D.C.
  • Visit your U.S. representative’s and senator’s district offices
  • Invite your U.S. congressional representative to attend classes at a local school 
    and stay for lunch
  • Invite state legislator to visit school and stay for lunch
  • Invite the mayor to visit in the school and eat lunch
  • Invite school board members to spend an hour in the classroom

Program Ideas - organize special programs for or report on the following at PTA meetings:

  • Legislative information in "What’s Happening in Washington" e-newsletter
  • Legislative information in "Capitol News", VA PTA e-newsletter
  • Importance of the PTA legislative program
  • Importance of public education

Community Events:

  • Visit the Chamber of Commerce representatives about importance of the schools to the community
  • Meeting with community groups to discuss activities, cooperative efforts
  • Present the Legislative Program to the School Board
  • Make presentations to men’s and women’s service clubs on children’s issues

Parent Involvement Opportunities:

  • Attend PTA Day at the General Assembly in January/February
  • Attend the Legislation/Education Conference in August
  • Visit with the school principal and encourage interest in children’s issues
  • Attend school board meetings and encourage others to do so
  • Meet with school administrators to discuss parent participation on key committees
  • Develop with school administrators and school boards a schoolwide parent involvement policy
    Volunteer to service on the PTA Legislative or Education committee

Training Opportunities:

  • Inform parents about education issues that political candidates should be asked to address
  • Conduct advocacy training for PTA members
  • Attend Council, District, Region and State Training

Publicity Ideas:

  • Offer PSAs to local radio stations, TV stations and newspapers on the importance of public education the issues addressed in the Legislative Program
