Submitting
Items of Interest for Legislation Program
Local Units are encouraged to submit items
of interest to the Legislation Committee for consideration
of the program development. Deadline is March 1st.
District
Spring Legislation Program Meetings
Districts conduct Legislation Program
meetings in the Spring to provide an open forum for discussion
of the Prelimiary Proposed Leglisation Program. Districts
present any recommendations to edit or substitute to
the Board of Managers at their annual Spring Board Meeting.
Public Hearing on Current Program
Members are invited to attend the Public
Hearing during the annual Spring Board Meeting to participate
in dicussion for any or all legislative items in the program.
Only the Board votes on the legislative items. Following
the
Spring
Board Meeting,
the program becomes the Propsed Legislation Program.
Leadership Training Workshops on Legislation
Workshops are presented at the annual Leadeship
Training Conference in July on the Virginia PTA Legislation
Program. The current program is included as part of the
training.
District
Fall Legislation Program Meetings
Districts conduct fall legislation program
meetings to provide further information about the program
in preparation of local unit voting.
Local Unit Voting on Current Program
Local Units then present the program to
their membership for a vote. Yes, No, and Abstention votes
are counted and submitted to the District Director by the
October 31st deadline.
Voting Report at Convention
Local Unit votes per District are reported
to the Legislation Committee for tallying at the Pre-Convention
Board Meeting. The Program Voting Report is then presented
by the Legislation Committee Chair during one of the General
Sessions of the Convention. The Program, as adopted by
the voting membership, becomes the Legislation Program.
Advocating at General Assembly (Leg & Capitol Committees)
The Legislation Program is used
during the General Assembly to speak to legislation of
interest or opposition
to
the VAPTA as supported by the program. The Legislation
and Capitol Committees work diligently during the General
Assembly to advocate on behalf of the VAPTA and keep membership
involved through Action Alerts and reports.
PTA Day at the General Assembly
PTA Day provides an opportunity for local
unit members to meet with their delegates during session
to advocate on behalf of the VAPTA.
