Virginia
PTA Capitol Committee
The Capitol Committee is the liaison between the Virginia
legislative body and the Virginia PTA. As a sub-committee
of the state Legislation Committee, the members serve as
PTA representatives for the President. The committee works
only in accordance with the adopted Legislation Program
and under the direction of the President and Legislation
Committee Chair. Members do not express any personal opinions
as committee members.
While
the committee works year-round with the Legislation Committee,
the majority of the committee work is required
during the General Assembly session
(January and/or February). During the session, the committee
is in Richmond assisting the Legislation Chair; monitoring
the bills of interest to the PTA; speaking to legislative
representatives and staff as directed by the chair or president
to develop support for PTA concerns; attending public hearings,
helping prepare statements, and reporting daily to the
President.
No more than six members are appointed by the President
and serve a one year term. A committee chair is appointed
from the committee and is an ex-officio member of the Legislation
Committee.
The
one year term of office for a Capitol Committee member
begins August 1st and ends the following year on July
31st. If
