Advocacy
is the active support of a cause, idea or policy. To
be an effective advocacy group, Virginia PTA needs
the ability to quickly contact its members to mobilize
for action. VA PTA Action Alert Network is the
grassroots advocacy system that provides direct contact
by Virginia PTA members with members of the General Assembly,
and occasionally with state regulatory agencies. When
such contact is needed, the Virginia PTA Legislation
Committee issues Action Alerts describing the pending
legislative issue and the action needed. Network participants
also have access to committee members and the president
who can answer their questions and otherwise assist in
their advocacy efforts.
By joining the network, members will periodically receive
legislative ACTION ALERTS, as well as the monthly
legislative newsletter CAPITOL NEWS by email.
In
order to participate in the Action Alert Network, one
must:
- Be
a Virginia PTA member.
- Respond
to Legislative Action Alerts in a timely manner.
- Express
the position of the Virginia PTA, as set forth
in Alerts and based on resolutions and positions
statements.
- Provide
feedback to the Virginia PTA Legislation Committee
regarding their legislative contacts.
Understand the legislative issues upon which action is requested.
To
join the VA PTA Action Alert Network:
1. If you already subscribe to VA PTA VOICE or CAPITOL NEWS e-newsletters,
you must open a recent issue in your e-mail program and scroll to the bottom
of that e-newsletter. Look for the link that says Powered by List Builder,
which is your personal subscription link. Follow the link and then CHECK the
Action Alert Network box, enter the subscription CODE (Alert06) and
the name of your local unit PTA

up. You must CHECK the Action Alert Network box, enter
the subscription CODE (Alert06) and
the name of your local unit PTA.
NOTE:
If you receive an error message telling you that you are
already subscribed, follow step 2 after you receive the SUBSCRIPTION
CODE.
The
Virginia PTA also offers two free e-newsletters delivered
by email. You can sign-up for either or both of these
when you join the network.
VA
PTA VOICE is published on the 1st & 3rd Mondays,
providing news and information about Virginia PTA
events, programs and projects. CAPITOL NEWS is published
on the second Monday of each month, providing news and
information from the Legislation and Education committees.
