Virginia PTA 2008 Convention Fees Reduced!

icon 2008 Oct VOICE- EXTRA! Convention fees lowered

The current economic turmoil has taken a toll on all of us. Your Virginia PTA Board of Managers recognizes that local PTAs are just now coming to grips with what these days of economic turbulence will mean for the programs and services they provide for members.

In a few weeks, Virginia PTA will hold its annual business meeting at Convention 2008 in Roanoke.  It is a critically important meeting! But we recognize that economic times are difficult.

To that end, effective today, Virginia PTA will:

1) REDUCE all pre-registration fees by $50 to a flat $135.  On-site registration, with no food guarantees, also will be cut by $50, to $190.  This will not cover the costs to Virginia PTA of holding the Convention.  But it is a show of support for our local units, a way to help them defray gas or meal costs and it underscores the message that Convention really is that important to attend.  Deadline for pre-registration is extended to Oct. 30.  Units that have already paid a higher fee will recive refunds.

2) Extend the hotel pre-registration deadline until Oct. 20.  PLEASE NOTE: The PTA block of rooms at the Hotel Roanoke for Thursday, Nov. 6, is SOLD OUT,  but rooms remain at the PTA rate for Friday, the 7th, and Saturday the 8th.

3) Send messages to all district directors, standing committee chairs and officers explaining the urgency of attending Convention and asking them to assist local PTAs with cost-cutting measures like car-pooling and room-sharing.

Why is it important to attend Convention?

  • Delegates will elect a president-elect, who will take over as president of this, the nation's 4th-largest, state PTA a year from now!
  • Delegates will weigh in on issues of concern to this body that will be addressed in Richmond and Washington in the coming months.
  • Attendees participate in a variety of workshops where ideas and skills can be learned and later shared with your local PTA
  • Attendees exchange ideas and successes, build networks and learn from PTAs around the state
  • You have opportunities to develop leadership skills
  • Attendees create helpful lists of contacts - other leaders, vendors, experts
  • Convention attendees can celebrate the outstanding work of local unit, council and district PTAs

PTA is a continuous learning process. We only make progress if we are willing to accept the challenge of change, to learn and to grow in knowledge, skills and experience and to participate in the business of the organization.

Come join us for an "Out of the Box" experience on November 7-9, 2008 at the Hotel Roanoke, in the lovely Roanoke valley.
