To Train or Not to Train - That is the Question!
Training Is a Legitimate PTA Expense

Is attending PTA training a legitimate expense? Is it worth the money we take away from the kids? Will we really learn anything we don't already know? You bet!!!!

PTA training is a legitimate PTA expense and should be included in your annual budget. The state PTA works very hard to keep expenses related to training at a minimum. Many materials and services are donated or provided at a discount. All training events are organized by the Board of Managers, volunteers just like you. Workshops are conducted by PTA experts as well as volunteers from other organizations. Paid presenters are secured only when the topic is of such importance the PTA feels it necessary to offer the training. Many volunteer hours are used to prepare and present PTA training.

Where and When?

July - Leadership Training Conference - the ultimate PTA training experience.
Each July, the Virginia PTA offers a three-day weekend of comprehensive basic training for new and returning PTA leaders and members. Generally over 50 workshop topics are available for the participant to choose from. LTC is conducted on a college campus to keep costs reasonable. Participants stay in the dorms, eat in the dining facility and attend workshops in campus classrooms. Workshop handouts, when applicable, will be available for download on the website following the conference.

July - Legislation/Education Conference - topic specific training.
The Legislation/Education Conference sponsored by the Virginia PTA Legislation and Education Committees offers a full day of topic specific training as well as an introduction to the Virginia PTA Proposed Legislation Program for the upcoming year.

November - Annual Convention - the business meeting of the Virginia PTA
The annual convention is the business meeting of the Virginia PTA. Delegates approve state bylaws, elect state officers (in odd-numbered years), and attend workshops on emerging issues. Resolutions are presented, and those adopted by the convention body establish the position of the State PTA. All local units are encourage to send representation to convention. Workshops are also presented, however, training is NOT the focus of Convention. Please note that workshops are presented on issues of importance to the PTA. Basic training for PTA leadership is presented at the annual LTC.
