It is a reality that many localities
face inadequate funding for public education. PTAs
often respond to a need for equipment or materials
by sponsoring fund-raising activities. Many people
feel compelled to support fund-raising efforts. Too
many commercial fund-raising activities, that do
not offer products or services that meet a need within
their lives, can and will make them think differently
about PTA . They may begin to question their financial
support of PTA through the purchase of fund-raising
products.
It
is also a reality that in many localities, families
cannot financially support frequent
fundraising activities and if they view your
PTA as a 'money-oriented'
organization, they may not be inclined to join or participate in PTA activities.
PTA
can sponsor fun activities that raise funds or
incorporate a program or
informational service into a fundraiser. Old-fashioned projects like fairs,
carnivals or spaghetti
dinners may not produce significant funds; however, they do provide fun,
safe activities for families. When you include
workshops, presentations or information
booths in such activities, not only do you raise funds with fun activities,
you also provide an opportunity to keep parents informed about important
issues regarding
their children's education, health and safety.

3-to-1
Rule
"When planning the year's activities,
PTAs should use the 3-to-1 rule. For every fund
raising
activity, there should be at least three non-fund
raising projects aimed at helping parents or children,
or advocating for school improvements."
Not only will this protect
your tax-exempt status by providing services that
meet the purpose of your tax-exemption, it will
encourage and increase in membership and participation
by families
and the community.
