2016 General Assembly Session - Nearing the End!

It may seem like a while since the GA was in session, but the official end isn't until April 20 when we close the veto session.

Unofficially, though, it was a good year for public education - which serves almost 94% of the students in the Commonwealth. The final budget includes an $892.3 million increase in direct aid for public education. Virginia PTA worked with other stakeholders to help defeat the Charter School constitutional amendment - which was a big win! Governor McAuliffe vetoed the Parents Savings Account and Virtual education bills - both of which we opposed. Lots more information to come once the session comes to an official end. Look for our General Assembly final report online and in your May mailing.

Kindle 2017 PTA Family Reading Experience!

In March 2017, thousands of schools will transform their National Reading Month event into a PTA Family Reading Experience - an interactive event engaging whole families in reading activities. Parents take part in the fun with their kids and leave the event with a deeper understanding of the simple ways they can support.

Plan your March 2017 National Reading Month. Apply for classroom of Kindle E-readers to support your Family Reading Experience next March. Application closes June 1.

Election Voting!

Are PTA's allowed to use electronic voting for general membership items? The answer is no, and here's why:

  • Members cannot hear each other and participate during the meeting.
  • For elections, this does not allow for nominations from the floor.
  • Our bylaws require a quorum at general membership meetings (10 members minimum), and you can't tell how many people you have.

What about executive board and committee meetings?

  • Check your bylaws - and remember the key is member participation. Members must be able to hear each other and all participate during the meeting.

For more election info, check out:

Share these with your board - show the presentation at a meeting, use the guide as a handout, or have your board participate in the mock election. A special thanks goes to our Chesterfield County Council of PTAs and Sara Gilliam for their work on these tools!!
